Tems gave a fan an explanation for why she hasn’t gone back to Uganda, and it makes sense.
A fan asked Tems to explain why she hasn’t gone back to the African nation during a Q&A session on Tuesday, November 25.
“What’s the lore behind you not coming to Uganda? #AskTems,” the fan wrote on X.
In response, the singer merely posted a picture from her 2020 court appearance in Uganda, where she was accused of breaking the nation’s COVID-19 regulations.
Tems had previously discussed the experience with Angie Martinez in 2023. She claimed the experience was traumatic after spending two nights in a Ugandan prison for allegedly breaking COVID-19 social distancing regulations.
“We didn’t break the rules but it was basically like set up,” she told Martinez. “After the show, the police came, they weren’t in uniforms. They just knocked on my hotel door — we were eating lunch or dinner, my manager and I. And they just came and said we should follow them … so [my manager] went with them, but they came back upstairs to pick me up.”
She continued, “That was so scary. I spent two nights in jail. … I thought I wasn’t gonna come out. I thought … I was seeing this for a reason. Maybe this is for me to help these people in this prison. It was crazy, I’m not gonna lie.”
Love Is A Kingdom, Tems’ most recent studio project, was released on November 21.
