Romanian court sentences US rapper Wiz Khalifa to 9 months for drug possession

By

More than a year after participating at a music festival in Romania, American rapper Wiz Khalifa was given a nine-month prison sentence for narcotics possession by a Romanian court on Thursday.

In July 2024, Romanian authorities detained Khalifa for reportedly consuming cannabis while performing at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti, a Constanta County coastal resort. The rapper, whose true name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was caught in possession of more than 18 grammes of cannabis, according to prosecutors, and he used part of it while performing.

According to Romania’s state news agency, Agerpres, the Constanta Court of Appeal sentenced Khalifa after finding him guilty of “possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption.” The choice is final.

The ruling was made after Khalifa was fined 3,600 lei ($830) for “illegal possession of dangerous drugs” by a lower court in Constanta County in April. However, the prosecution appealed the ruling and requested a heavier penalty.

Some of the strictest drug prohibitions in Europe are found in Romania. Cannabis possession for personal use is illegal and carries a fine or a jail sentence ranging from three months to two years.

Since Khalifa is a citizen of the United States and does not live in Romania, it is unclear if Romanian officials will attempt to file an extradition request.

The 38-year-old rapper from Pittsburgh became well-known after releasing his breakthrough mixtape, “Kush + Orange Juice.” The well-known rapper smoked a big, hand-rolled cigarette while performing his hit song “Young, Wild & Free” on stage in Romania last summer.
