The Spice Girls were duly honoured by BLACKPINK on the last night of their two-day engagement at London’s Wembley Stadium.
With the Deadline World Tour, the international K-pop sensations finally returned to London over the weekend. This was their first trip there since they headlined a sold-out performance at BST Hyde Park in 2023.
On Saturday, August 16, BLACKPINK concluded their Wembley appearance with a surprise performance of the Spice Girls’ breakthrough single, “Wannabe,” in a throwback to the British pop icons. The crowd was singing along as the quartet put their own touch on the classic ’90s single, which spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1997.
This wasn’t the first time JENNIE, LISA, JISOO and ROSÉ took on “Wannabe.” They previously performed the iconic track during a “Carpool Karaoke” segment with James Corden on The Late Late Show in 2023. During the ride, LISA shared that she was obsessed with the Spice Girls growing up, while JENNIE said she admired how each member had her own distinct personality. Corden even gave the BLACKPINK members their own “Spice” names, with ROSÉ becoming “Aussie Pink,” LISA as “Boss Pink,” JENNIE as “Shy Pink” and JISOO dubbed “Nail Pink.”
To cap off their second and last night in London, BLACKPINK returned to the stage on Saturday to perform “Wannabe,” dancing and singing as a group, giving the Wembley crowd a surprise encore.
Interestingly, the sentence “spice up your life” from BLACKPINK’s most recent hit, “Jump,” alludes to the Spice Girls’ 1997 album Spiceworld’s opening tune. In late July, “Jump,” which Diplo produced, made its debut at the top of the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts.
