Janice Turner, the mother of Sean Kingston, has been found guilty of fraud along with her son and sentenced to five years in federal prison.
The Sun Sentinel reported that Turner was sentenced in Florida on Wednesday. Turner reportedly apologised to the judge and begged the court for “mercy.”
The Southern District of Florida’s U.S. Attorney’s Office declared in April that Kingston and Turner had been found guilty of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Prosecutors claim that the two had robbed luxury merchandisers of over $1 million worth of expensive items, including a bulletproof Cadillac Escalade. It was mentioned at the time that the two might get maximum terms of up to 20 years for each offence.
Next month, Kingston is scheduled to receive his punishment. Following Turner’s sentencing, her attorney, Humberto Dominguez, told reporters that she had “mixed feelings” about the decision.
“We won on some points and we obviously lost on other points, all of which will obviously be handled on appeal,” he said, as seen in the WPLG Local 10 video above. “Overall, the judge tried to do what was right, what was fair.”
Dominguez also cited a letter that Kingston wrote to the judge, in which the ‘Beautiful Girls’ singer praised her as a ‘kind, caring person’ and a ‘wonderful mum’.
Kingston called 2024 a year of “highs and lows” in November, citing Chris Brown’s 11:11 (Deluxe) Grammy nominations as an example of the former. Kingston was listed as a writer of the album’s single “Sensational,” which was nominated for Best African Music Performance.
