As England’s women’s football team celebrated their recent victory in the European Championships, Burna Boy surprised everyone by performing on stage outside Buckingham Palace in London.
After a thrilling victory over Spain in a penalty shootout on Sunday, July 27, the Lionesses won the trophy in Basel, Switzerland. After winning the trophy in 2022, the team defended its title.
Over the course of the last two days, the team has been celebrating their victory. They visited 10 Downing Street first, followed by an open-top bus parade and presentation outside of London’s renowned Buckingham Palace.
Here, the Nigerian musician surprised England manager Sarina Wiegman by performing spontaneously on stage with the team. Alex Scott, a former England player, introduced Burna Boy to the audience and mentioned that he was Wiegman’s favourite vocalist.
Scott said: “Three years ago in Trafalgar Square you said, ‘I am not ready to dance, the music was not quite right.’ The surprise right now — we know who your favorite artist is — he is in the building, so we want to see you dance. Please give it up, everybody, for Sarina’s favorite artist. Burna Boy is coming to the stage.”
As he stepped onto the platform, Wiegman, who has been the team’s manager since 2021, yelled, “Oh, no way,” and appeared stunned. After that, the two danced and performed “For Your Hand,” a song from his 2022 album Love, Damini that features Ed Sheeran.
Wiegman told reporters in 2023 that Burna Boy was at the top of her playlists and that she was a tremendous fan of the Afrobeat artist. “I’m not sure what the song [“For My Hand”) with Burna Boy and Ed Sheeran is called.” That is undoubtedly the song I have played the most.
With their win, England became the first team, men’s or women’s, to win a major football prize abroad. The women’s squad also won at home in 2022, and the men’s team won the 1966 World Cup at Wembley Stadium.
