Billie Eilish expressed her gratitude for being surrounded by people who look “exactly” like her during a recent performance.
The singer made the remark on Saturday, July 26, while performing at Dublin’s 3Arena as part of her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour. She talked briefly to the audience during a talk break about her Irish heritage and how she enjoys seeing people with similar traits to herself.
“As you guys know, I’m Irish, so it’s cool to be here,” the 23-year-old told the crowd, as seen in the video above. “Obviously, I am not from here, but it’s really cool to come somewhere and, like, everybody looks exactly like you, and you’re all just as pasty as me, I love it.”
She continued, “Seriously though, it’s so amazing. It just makes me feel so seen … Also, like, a thousand of my relatives are in the crowd right now, I’m pretty sure. Thank you for coming. Thank you for having me here. I love it here. It’s so beautiful and you are all so beautiful and I see so many familiar faces out there.”
Eilish’s references to her Irish ancestry are not the first. She told Today FM earlier this month, prior to her first performance in Ireland, that although she was informed she was Irish and Scottish growing up, she didn’t feel a strong connection to her heritage until she travelled to Ireland, which she described as “really cool.”
Naturally, some online users expressed how odd it was to hear her utter such a thing, while others supported her. See a few of the responses below.
