“Birds of a Feather” has been one of Billie Eilish’s most popular songs since its release last year. However, the pop star stated in a recent interview that she nearly abandoned it completely because she thought it was too “stupid” to be released.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal for a story that was released on Wednesday, October 29, Eilish talked about wrestling with the song in the studio with her brother and co-producer Finneas for over a full year. Eilish was still unsure if “Birds of a Feather,” which is much happier and more upbeat than the singer’s typical pop songs, will ever be released.
“Multiple times I was like, “We should cut this,’” she told the publication. “Even when I played the whole album for the label, I was like, ‘Guys, this one is kind of stupid.’”
Fortunately, “Birds of a Feather” was included on the track list of Eilish’s third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, which was released in May of last year and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. With up to 1.781 billion plays, the upbeat love song ended 2024 as Spotify’s most-streamed song of the year after spending three weeks at the top of the Billboard Global 200. (It currently has over 3 billion users on the platform.)
Eilish’s tour set list also ends with “Birds of a Feather.” The singer’s tour, which began in September 2024 in support of HMHAS, is currently just a month away from its conclusion with two gigs in San Francisco in November.
Eilish told WSJ that part of the reason she has been on tour for so long is so she will have plenty of time for breaks. She told the newspaper, “It takes longer, and you make less money that way.” “But it’s magical to me.”
