BET just revealed a huge shock: the Soul Train Awards and the BET Hip-Hop Awards have been placed on indefinite suspension.

Scott Mills, CEO of BET, told Billboard that the change is due to changing media consumption patterns and the financial realities of BET’s linear channel.

Speaking in the interview, Scott said “So for BET line, we have suspended the Soul Train and Hip Hop award shows.”

The awards will not be permanently discontinued; according to reports, BET is investigating their best place in a world that prioritises digital technology.

Therefore, for the time being, there won’t be any more hip-hop cyphers lighting up the autumn or daring Soul Train tributes blazing in the winter.

Even though the platform may change, the disappearance of these events still has a profound impact because they were essential to Black music culture.
