Presenting its final collection at Balenciaga, Demna has unveiled a deeply personal tribute that fuses couture tradition with modern reinvention.
Shot across Paris, the collection pays homage to the city where his design career started and represents the pinnacle of his quest for “impossible perfection,” honouring the tradition of Cristóbal Balenciaga.
From seamless Guipure lace dresses to feather-embroidered “mink” jackets and sculptural tailoring influenced by bourgeois dress norms, the pieces are distinguished by architectural silhouettes, technological accuracy, and reengineered comfort. Subtle, heartwarming details reveal Elizabeth Taylor’s wealth, old Hollywood glitz, and family memories.
Additionally, the collection uses a couture perspective to rethink commonplace goods like sneakers and briefcases. Wearer names are used in place of logos, atelier floor scraps are used to make flowers, and tailoring fits the body rather than the other way around.
Demna’s departure, which concludes his ten years in the House, is a final act of poetic, intimate storytelling that is both maximum in artistry and minimal in ego.
