Chelsea FC star Cole Palmer is not ready to share the glory of his signature ‘Shivering’ goal celebration with anyone. With plans to sell merch in the works, the footballer has reportedly applied to trademark his signature ‘shivering’ goal celebration and ‘Cold Palmer’ nickname.

Palmer won’t be the first footballer to legally protect his goal celebration signature as David Beckham, Kylian Mbappe and Gareth Bale had earlier done same. Beckham had earlier legally trademarked his surname, as well as DB07 and DB23. While Mbappé had earlier secured global rights to his image with his crossed-arm celebration, Gareth Bale’s shirt number and heart symbol had been registered alongside the ‘Eleven of Hearts’ brand.

Palmer is taking legal steps to protect his intellectual property with his application and a video of his popular signature celebration. Following the steps to protect their intellectual properties, fake merchandise and sellers looking to make a quick buck off of popular players have become rampant recently. The Chelsea baller is reclaiming his name and likeness to be used and monetised on his own terms by registering with the IP office of Government.

With 33 goals and assists last season – and one of the most popular goal celebrations in the world, Palmer had a breakout season to fondly remember. The name ‘Cold Palmer’ followed suit and the internet has been lapping it up since, after the icy celebration became a norm.

Palmer’s signature celebration has spread globally like a wildfire in less than a year with players around the world channelling their inner CP, from Angel City’s Alyssa Thompson to Brazil’s Kerolin at the 2024 Olympics.

The merch possibilities are endless though the trademark isn’t official yet.
